We went two rows at a time, first snapping a line every 16 inches. Tim started out mixing the mortar, then Anne took over. Tim would lay the mud up to the line, and cut the half-width tiles against the wall. Then Ron would lay them in place, using two levels, straight 2x4s, a pipe, and whatever else we could find to use as tools to make sure the tiles were straight and level!
